UFC middleweight Nick Catone is calling it quits.

After having amassed a 10-4 record, Catone recently suffered a back injury that has forced him out of his scheduled UFC on FOX 15 bout with Vitor Miranda. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back, quite literally, according to a report on UFC.com on Wednesday.

The back injury, in addition to numerous past health issues, led Catone to not only back out of the April 18 bout, but also to announce his retirement.

“In the last couple years I’ve had a lot of injuries,” Catone told UFC.com’s Thomas Gerbasi.

He’s had other problems, including his Achilles, anterior cruciate ligament, and tendon injuries, but Catone said it has primarily been his back trouble that forced him to go the retirement route.

“My back has probably been the biggest thing slowing me down. I’m not able to train like I used to. I train for a couple days, then I’m hurting for a couple days. I still fought because I enjoy it, but when I’m waking up in pain every day, I’m just not enjoying it anymore,” said Catone, who didn’t want to sacrifice any more of his future with a wife and daughter at home.

Nick Catone UFN18_019-750“I’ve got the little one at home, I have another one on the way, and I want to be able to have a life down the road and not be all banged up because I stayed in a little too long,” he said. “I think my body’s trying to tell me something, but it’s a hard decision – I’ve been competing since I’m seven years old and I’m having a tough time with it.

“I was dreading that this day would have to come, and it came a little sooner than I thought it would.”

Upon Catone revealing his injury and retirement, it came to light that Miranda was also injured and withdrew from the bout. UFC officials are expected to announce a replacement fight shortly.
